I was on the radio the other day & Eddie Murphy's singing career came up. Party all the Time was of course the first song mentioned. But it reminded of my youth back in the mid 80's and that I had this album (I may have had it on cassette, not real clear on that). Anyway, like you, I started thinking about that one song I REALLY liked on the album but drew a blank. I looked up the album on iTunes & BAM - there it was - My God is Color Blind! I immediately downloaded it & have been listening to it in the car over and over on the way to work! I then started thinking I was probably the only other person in the world who liked this song so I googled it & found this blog. I don't know you - I've never heard of your blog - but we shall forever be link together by the ballad of Eddie Murphy! Blue, black or white, you can be a friend of mine!

There are a couple of errors in your blog.I was at the ceremony covering the event for the Bakersfield Californian.

1---Only Haggard received the doctorate. Owens received the President's Medal, since the CSU system does not give doctorates posthumously.

2---Haggard did leave when the reading of graduate's names started but he did not slip out the back, he left the stage in full view of the audience.(The newspaper had that fact wrong).

Andrew, you detected my closed-mindedness from the tone I adopted in my praise of real music.
But can you blame me?
Take a look at the oft-praised popular song "Imagine" by John Lennon, which some people praise because of its political ramifications, religious ramifications, or simply because of its poetry or its instrumentation. It's obvious that the song pales in comparison to J.S. Bach's two-part inventions (to say nothing of the three-part inventions).
This is the reason why my Empoprise-MU music blog concentrates solely on real music, and avoids the nasty popular stuff.
If you're interesting in reading about popular music, go read Rolling Stone or watch MTV - oh, wait, they've quit concentrating on music. Now we know why.
In all seriousness, at some point I do want to write something about the economics of music over the centuries, and how the former system of rich patron sponsorship has moved to a "free market" (sort of) for music.
